Presentation Summary: 

The California Building Code provides multiple prescriptive options for protecting elevator hoistway openings to prevent the spread of fire and smoke. This presentation explores the underlying intent of hoistway opening protection, reviews the various code-permitted protection options (e.g., enclosed elevator lobbies, hoistway pressurization., etc.), and summarizes advantages, disadvantages, and practical considerations of each approach. Local amendments and jurisdiction-specific requirements will also be discussed.

Presenter Bios: 

Napoleon “Leo” Nino is a Senior Fire Protection Engineer and Director of Northern California Operations at Jensen Hughes. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Leo is a registered Professional Engineer in California.  With extensive expertise in fire protection and life safety code consulting, he specializes in smoke control system design, fire and smoke modeling, egress analysis, and the development of innovative code-compliant approaches for unique and alternative designs.
