Passive Fire Resistance

  • Discuss the differences of Fire Walls and Fire Barriers and how they are constructed.
  • Discuss options that are available for top down construction
  • How to properly handle five-sided enclosures
  • Discuss how to properly maintain fire ratings for unique conditions such as
    • walls at elevator door details
    • call boxes and indicator boxes
    • continuity of control joints above fire rated doors
  • How to properly patch and repair while maintaining fire resistance
  • New developments regarding fire resistive materials
  • Lighter weight drywall
  • Enhanced mold and mildew resistance

Nestor G. Sanchez, Building Sciences, USG

Nestor G. Sanchez has been a Senior Manager in Building Sciences with USG for 23 years. He is responsible for the valuation of USG products and systems through testing and analysis in accordance with ASTM Standards E-84, E119, E136 and E814, UL Standard UL 2079 and International Standards.

Prior to joining USG, Nestor worked at Underwriters Laboratories for 16 years where he was responsible for all investigations undertaken by UL, Inc. relative to the fire resistance of structural assemblies and for the publication of the fire resistive designs in Volume 1 of UL's Fire Resistance Directory.
