1997 Award

We are pleased to announce that the annual SFPE scholarship has been awarded to Robert Campbell and John Patrick Woycheese. Both applicants have shown impressive academic achievements as well as continued commitment to and support of the Northern California/Nevada SFPE chapter. As a result, the scholarship committee has decided to split the $1000 scholarship and award equal amounts of $500 to each applicant. The scholarship was first initiated in 1996 to further the development of fire protection engineering in the Northern California area.

Robert, a California native, is finishing his degree in Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland. Upon completion, he is planning to return to California to work in the fire protection arena. Robert is a member of SFPE, NFPA and the president of Salamander, Fire Protection Engineering Honor Society.

John Woycheese, co-recipient of the scholarship, has completed his masters degree at the University of California, Berkeley. He is pursuing his Ph.D. which he anticipates to complete in 1999. John has conducted research into the spread of urban/wildland as well as post-earthquake fires. He was drawn to the fire protection field by his father, also a fire protection engineer. John is working on a research paper to be published in the SFPE journal, about propagation of lofted brands, a mechanism for fire propagation observed in the Oakland Hills Fire.

On behalf of the members of the SFPE Northern California/Nevada Chapter we like to congratulate Robert and John, and express our appreciation in their continued involvement in the fire protection community.
